Impact of tides on calving patterns at Kronebreen, Svalbard – insights from three-dimensional ice dynamical modelling

چکیده

Abstract. Understanding calving processes and their controls is of importance for reducing uncertainty in sea level rise estimates. The impact tidal fluctuations frontal melt on patterns has been researched through both modelling observational studies but remains uncertain may vary from glacier to glacier. In this study, we isolate various different impacts a terminus understand influence the timing events model Kronebreen, Svalbard, duration 1 month. addition, impose simplified parameterisation onto front order allow an undercut develop over course simulations. We find that show signal when there small or no undercut, but, after critical point, undercut-driven becomes dominant drowns out signal. However, relationship complex, large even with modelled undercut. sizes are then compared profiles, showing undercuts up ca. 25 m plausible more complex geometry being evident observations than captured model. These findings highlight interactions occurring at Kronebreen suggest further data work needed fully hierarchy calving.

Estimating the long-term calving flux of Kronebreen, Svalbard, from geodetic elevation changes and mass-balance modelling

This study independently quantifies geodetic elevation change and models surface mass balance to solve the continuity equation. The approach is tested on two dynamically different glaciers, Kongsvegen and Kronebreen in northwest Svalbard, through two time epochs, 1966–1990/95 (I) and 1990/95–2007 (II). On Kongsvegen, a dynamically inactive glacier, the residual term represents an error associat...

Glacimarine sedimentation processes at Kronebreen and Kongsvegen, Svalbard

Tidewater glaciers deposit sediment at their terminus, thereby reducing the relative water depth. Reduced water depth can lead to increased glacier stability through decreased rates of iceberg calving, glacier thinning and submarine melting. Here we investigate sedimentation processes at the termini of Kronebreen and Kongsvegen, Svalbard. We mapped the fjord floor bathymetry in August 2009 and ...

Calving of large tabular icebergs from ice shelf rift systems

[1] We used Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar to study the detachment process that allowed two large icebergs to calve from the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. Time series of rift geometries indicate that rift widths increased steadily, whereas rift lengths increased episodically through several discrete rift-tip propagation events. We also conducted modeling experiments constrained by the o...

Three - Dimensional Face Modelling

This thesis describes methods for modelling the shape, texture and appearance of human faces in three dimensions. These models provide a foundation for applications such as image segmentation and object recognition. The models use a data set of 24 faces acquired using a 3-D scanner. To make the data useful in a statistical context, the representation of the objects must be unified, a process ca...
